RUUD outdoor condenser running again after an AC repair by Cool Aid

McAllen Heat and the Parts It Wears Out

In July 2009 the weather station at McAllen Miller International Airport averaged a daily high of 104.2 degrees, and the month beat the station's old record for the hottest month, set in 1998. Most summers are not that bad, but highs in the upper 90s for weeks at a time are normal here, and your outdoor unit sits in that heat all afternoon.

The parts that give out are the ones that switch on and off under that load. Capacitors weaken, contactor points burn, and condenser fan motors slow down until the compressor runs hot. A weak capacitor is cheap to replace. Left alone, it makes the compressor fight to start every cycle, and the compressor is the expensive part. When the outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin, switch the system off and call. Running it that way is how a small repair turns into a big one.

Houses Built Around 1995

The median McAllen home was built in 1995, according to census survey data. Plenty of those houses are on a second or third outdoor unit, but the inside of the system is often original. On houses this age we often have to look past the obvious part: a return plenum that has pulled loose in the attic, flex duct that got crushed when someone stored boxes up there, or a thermostat wire with a nicked jacket that shorts when it gets hot.

A system built before about 2010 probably runs on R-22. That refrigerant is no longer made, so a leak on one of those units is a different conversation than a leak on a newer one. We tell you the age of the system and what that means before you spend anything.

Duplexes, Fourplexes and Rentals

Around 28 percent of McAllen housing units are in buildings with two or more units, and about four in ten homes are rented. On a fourplex the condensers often sit side by side with faded or missing labels. When you call, tell us the unit number and, if you know it, which outdoor unit and which breaker belong to it. It saves time on site.

If you are a tenant, let your landlord know first. We need the owner or manager to approve the price, and we will explain the repair to them the same way we explain it to you.

Read the Electric Bill Before You Call

McAllen is in Texas's deregulated electricity market. AEP Texas Central delivers the power and you pick a retail provider that sets your rate. That means a higher bill does not always mean a sick air conditioner. Your plan may have renewed at a new rate. Look at the kilowatt hours on the bill, not the dollar total, and compare to the same month last year.

If the kilowatt hours jumped and the weather was about the same, the AC is probably running longer than it should. A dirty outdoor coil, low refrigerant or a slow fan motor can all do that. That is worth a visit before August, not during it.

How AC Repair Works in McAllen

  1. 1

Tell Us the Unit and the Symptoms

Give us the address, the unit number if it is a duplex or fourplex, and what the system is doing. Humming, blowing warm, or not turning on at all each point to different parts.

  2. 2

    Meter Readings, Not Guesses

A licensed technician tests capacitors, contactors, motors and refrigerant pressures and shows you what the readings say.

  3. 3

The Person Paying Approves the Price

Homeowner, landlord or manager, whoever pays hears the price first. The service call is free when you have us do the repair, and repairs carry a three month warranty on electrical parts.

McAllen AC Repair FAQs

What is the $5,000 rule for AC repair?

Multiply the repair price by the age of the system in years. If the number is over 5,000, replacing usually makes more sense than repairing. A 12 year old system with a $350 repair comes out to 4,200, so fix it. It is a rule of thumb, and we will tell you if your situation is different.

What are the signs of a failing AC compressor?

The outdoor unit hums or clicks but does not start, the breaker trips soon after the system kicks on, the air coming out is barely cool, or the unit makes a loud clank at start up. Some of those are really a bad capacitor, which is a much cheaper repair, so get it tested before you assume the worst.

My electric bill went way up. Is my AC broken?

Maybe. Check the kilowatt hours first, because in McAllen your retail plan rate can change on its own. If usage went up with similar weather, call us and we will check the coil, the refrigerant charge and the fan motors.

Who should call for AC repair in a McAllen rental?

Either one can call, but the owner or property manager has to approve the price because they pay for it. Check your lease too. Some leases spell out who handles AC repairs.

Do you repair AC on weekends in McAllen?

Saturday 8 AM to 2 PM and Sunday 9 AM to 2 PM, for scheduled jobs. We do not take after hours emergency calls.

Do you fix car AC?

No. Some McAllen search results mix in auto shops. We work on air conditioning for houses and businesses only.
