What is Heating Repair?
Heating repair covers diagnosing and fixing a home's heating system, whether that's a heat pump, furnace, or the heating side of a combined HVAC unit. Even in South Texas, a working heating system matters during winter cold snaps.
Few Cold Days, But They Count
In the Valley the heat only runs a few weeks a year. So nobody knows whether it works until the first norther blows in and the house wakes up cold. In February 2021 the winter storm brought below freezing temperatures to the Valley, and a lot of families found out that same morning their heat wouldn't come on.
One customer wrote that their heat failed during a hard freeze, and Carlos found the part and had it installed the next day. When a cold front comes in, the calls come in together, so call early.
Two Kinds of Heat, Different Problems
Not all heating fails the same way, and knowing which kind you have helps you explain the problem over the phone.
- Electric heat strips: they sit inside the air handler. If the fan blows but the air comes out cold, it's often a burned out strip, a relay or a fuse.
- Heat pump: the same outdoor unit that cools in summer, running in reverse. If it won't heat, it may be the reversing valve, a sensor or the defrost control.
What's Normal and What Isn't
The first day the heat comes on each year, a burning dust smell for a few minutes is normal. It's dust that settled on the heat strips over the summer. If the smell lasts more than an hour, or it smells like burning plastic or wiring, turn the system off and call.
With a heat pump, steam coming off the outdoor unit on cold mornings is also normal. It's defrosting. What isn't normal is the unit staying covered in ice for hours or never shutting off.
If your thermostat has an Emergency Heat or Aux Heat setting, that's the backup heat strips. If the house only warms up on Emergency Heat, the heat pump has a problem and should be checked soon, because the strips alone use a lot more electricity.

Do you repair heating or only air conditioning?
Both. In most Valley homes the AC and the heating share the same system, and we repair both sides.
Why is my heater blowing cold air?
The most common causes are a burned out heat strip, a thermostat in the wrong mode, a bad fuse or relay, or a heat pump that isn't switching to heat. First check that the thermostat says Heat and is set above the temperature in the house. If that's right, call.
Do you come out at night during a cold front?
We don't run after hours calls. Weekday hours are 7 AM to 7 PM, Saturday 8 AM to 2 PM and Sunday 9 AM to 2 PM, with weekend visits scheduled in advance. If the heat fails at night, call first thing the next morning. Until then, close the curtains and the doors to rooms you aren't using.
Do you charge for the service call, and is there a warranty?
The service call is free when you have us do the repair. Repairs carry a three month warranty on electrical parts.
What should I do while I wait for the technician?
Close the curtains and the doors to rooms you aren't using, and keep the family in one room. If you use a portable electric heater, plug it straight into the wall, not an extension cord. The NFPA recommends keeping at least three feet clear around it, away from curtains, blankets and furniture.
