Why So Many McAllen Systems Are Coming Due

Half of McAllen's homes were built in 1995 or earlier, according to census survey data. The air conditioner that came with a mid 90s house is long gone. If the one that replaced it went in during the 2000s, it is at the end of a normal life now, and a unit from that era may still run on R-22 refrigerant that is no longer made.

When that second system fails, you are not only buying a new outdoor unit. You are deciding whether the indoor coil, the air handler, the line set and the ducts are good enough to keep. We look at each one and tell you which can stay and which should go, with the reasons.

The 3 Ton Question

People often ask whether a 3 ton unit will cool a 2,000 square foot house. Sometimes. Square footage rules of thumb are a starting point, not an answer. A one story house with big west facing windows and thin attic insulation needs more than the same size house with shade and a well insulated attic. Ceiling height, the number of people at home during the day and how leaky the ducts are all move the number.

Bigger is not safer. In Valley humidity an oversized system cools the air fast, shuts off, and leaves the house cold but clammy because it never ran long enough to pull moisture out. An undersized one runs nonstop in August and still loses ground. We size from the house in front of us, not from whatever tonnage was on the old label.

Replacing Units on a Duplex or Fourplex

With so much of McAllen's housing in small multi unit buildings, owners often face the same question several times. Replace each unit as it fails, or replace them together? Doing them together usually means one trip, matching equipment and one set of parts to keep track of. Doing them one at a time spreads the cost. We quote each unit separately so you can choose, and we coordinate access with tenants so nobody is left without air for long.

Efficiency and Your Electric Rate

In McAllen you pay a retail electric provider by the kilowatt hour, and an air conditioner here runs for most of the year. That is the setting where a more efficient system pays back. We show you the efficiency rating of each option and how its price compares, and you decide how far up the scale makes sense for how long you plan to stay in the house. Ask any installer, including us, whether a city permit applies to your job and who will pull it.

"Carlos came on a Friday, gave us a quote and said he could install the next day. Arrived on the scheduled time and 45 minutes later we had A/C, for the quoted price. I had some other people do some work for us and the final price was well above the quoted price."

Michael Gavin

"Our home system was over 10 years old and giving out every 6 months. It was time to replace it; Carlos and his son came over and replaced our HVAC system, very nice and knowledgeable."

Anthony Gonzalez

"After 11 months my two new HVAC units are still running perfectly and I am saving about 30% off of my monthly electric bill so they'll pay for themselves in about three or four years."

McAllen AC Installation FAQs

Will a 3 ton AC cool a 2,000 square foot house in McAllen?

It can, if the house has decent insulation, shade and tight ducts. A house with lots of west facing glass or a hot attic may need more. We measure before we recommend a size.

Is it better to oversize or undersize an air conditioner?

Neither. Oversized units short cycle and leave a humid house. Undersized units run constantly on the hottest days. A correctly sized system is the cheapest one to own.

Can I replace only the outdoor unit?

Sometimes, but the outdoor unit and indoor coil are designed to work as a matched pair, especially when switching refrigerants. If your coil is old or uses R-22, replacing both is usually the right call. We explain the tradeoff in the quote.

What warranty comes with a new installation?

One year on labor and ten years on parts.

Do you install commercial AC in McAllen?

Yes. We install residential and commercial systems, including rooftop units. Call with the building type and the current equipment so we can plan the walkthrough.
